The improved version was all thanks to Tuomas from Mobiflight. He showed me how the dual needles worked on the actual device, inspiring me to replicate the same technique. The entire unit can be backlit, and both needles are driven by their own stepper motor and homing microswitch. 
This means the needles will always return to zero on start up. 
 
I opted for the 28BYJ-28 steppers and control boards. They are cheap and easy to obtain, and attaching the needles is really simple. 
 
Before purchasing I highly recommend you take a look at the  Physical decal plate and needles from the physical shop. These are uniquely designed to prevent light bleed while allowing light to travel through the required parts. they can be found here.
